Chainsaw chain file size
The round file you sharpen with is set by the chain's pitch. Use the wrong size and you either skip the cutter edge or remove too much metal.
| Pitch | Round file | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 3/8″ Low Profile | 5/32″ (4.0 mm) | Small homeowner & electric/battery saws, pole pruners |
| .325″ | 3/16″ (4.8 mm) | Mid-size homeowner & ranch saws (40–60 cc) |
| 3/8″ | 7/32″ (5.2 mm) | Large homeowner, ranch & professional saws (55 cc +) |
| .404″ | 7/32″ (5.5 mm) | Large professional & harvester saws |
Gauge does not change the file size. Specific chains: 3/8″ LP .043″, .325″ .050″, 3/8″ .050″.
Questions
What size file do I need for .325 chain?
3/16″ (4.8 mm) round file.
What size file for 3/8 chain?
7/32″ (5.2 mm) round file for standard 3/8″ pitch; 5/32″ (4.0 mm) for 3/8″ low-profile ("Picco") chain.
Does gauge change the file size?
No. File size follows pitch (cutter size); gauge is the drive-link thickness and does not change which file you use.
Is the file size on my saw page?
Yes — each verified model page lists the round-file size for the chain fitted to that bar.
